About Us
BSA Troop 74
Metuchen, NJ
History

Troop 74 was chartered in February 1958, to the Centenary United Methodist Church in Metuchen, NJ.
Mr. Nick Pellegrino has served as the Scoutmaster of Troop 74 for the past twenty-three years. During his tenure thirty-two Scouts from Troop 74 have earned the rank of Eagle Scout.

Meetings

Troop meetings are held on Monday nights from 7:30 to 9:00 P.M. at the log cabin in Roosevelt Park, Edison. Scouts should arrive by 7:15 to prepare for the 7:30 meeting. Scouts and their families will be notified in advance of any schedule changes.
Scouts are encouraged to attend as many meetings and activities as possible.
No electronic devices are to be brought to troop meetings or activities.
If you cannot attend a meeting you must notify your patrol leader.
Scouts are expected to bring their handbooks, as well as, paper and pencil to each meeting.
Each patrol is required to prepare one lesson per month.
All Scouts with leadership positions must attend PLC meetings and training.

Parents Meetings

Parents are expected to attend the monthly committee/parents meetings, which are held concurrently with the regular troop meeting the second Monday of the month at the log cabin.

Activities

Overnight camping trips are held once a month, from September through June. Usually the only cost involved is approximately $10.00 for food. Once a year we take a trip to someplace like Boston, Massachusetts or Washington, DC. We have at least ski weekend a year. We also have several day trips during the year.
We go to the Ten Mile River Scout Reservation for two weeks during the month of July for summer camp. Summer camp is a very important part of the Scouting experience.
We have a week or longer high adventure trip for the older Scouts about once a year. We have been to Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimmarron, New Mexico; the Northern Tier Canoe Base in Atkiokan, Ontario, Canada; the Grand Canyon in Arizona; and the Florida Sea Base in both Islamorada, Florida, and Marsh Harbor, Bahamas.

Dues

Dues of twenty-five dollars per year are due by the last troop meeting of September. Scouts who have not paid their dues will not be allowed to participate in troop activities or advance in rank.

Uniforms

A Class “A” uniform is the official field uniform of the Boy Scouts of America. It is required for all Courts of Honor, Boards-of-Review, official uniform inspections, Scout Sunday, and summer camp.
A Class “B” uniform is a Troop 74 crew shirt. It is required for all troop meetings and other functions, excluding camping trips, service projects, and some fund-raisers. A Class “A” uniform may be substituted for a Class “B.”
The Boy Scout Handbook is part of your uniform.

Advancement

The BSA advancement program has six ranks, Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life, and Eagle. Scouts are expected to advance at their own speed.
Scouts earn merit badges by completing a set of requirements specific to each badge. Merit badges can be signed off only by certified adult counselors. Merit badges are required for the ranks of Star, Life and Eagle.

Service Projects

We periodically conduct service projects for our sponsor and community. Scouts are required to attend all troop service projects unless they are excused in advance by the Scoutmaster.

Behavior

All Scouts are expected to conduct themselves in accordance with the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Scouts are expected to show respect to all leaders—junior leaders as well as adult leaders. Scouts who do not behave will be sent home from meetings and trips. Chronic offenders will be removed from the troop.

Fundraising

The troop has one major fund-raiser; we sponsor a booth at the Metuchen Country Fair. All Scouts are required to help out unless they are excused in advance by the Scoutmaster.
The troop also runs several fundraisers where the bulk of the proceeds go into the individual Scouts accounts, to defray the cost of many of our trips. These fundraisers are based on individual sales of things like Christmas wreaths or pizza making kits.

Newsletter

The troop e-mails our monthly newsletter, the Troop 74 Bugle, to all Scouts and parents. This newsletter contains information on upcoming activities, and reports on what happens at our committee/parents meetings. The Bugle is also posted on this Website.
